Black Excellence in Leadership Award Recipients 2024
This year, the OTSU continued the Black Excellence in Leadership Award for the fourth year. This award is granted to two Black-identifying students who have demonstrated community-building and made a significant impact on the campus community through different leadership positions. Students had the opportunity to nominate themselves or a fellow peer that they believed exemplified Black leadership on campus and in their community.
As part of the application questions, students were asked about their views on the relationship between Blackness and power relations reinforced by social practices, such as traditions and social movements. The question invited applicants to evaluate how social concerns and material problems impact the way legacy is shaped in the Black community.
Applicants for the Black Excellence in Leadership Award were screened and reviewed by members of the OTSU, and winners were selected based on their involvement in the community, and the breadth and depth of their applicant responses. Winners were announced on April 23rd at the Black Student Collective Gala by Sam Brown, our 2023-2024 OTSU President.
The OTSU is proud to announce this year’s esteemed winners, Aliyat Olatinwo, who is graduating with a Bachelor's in Health Science, and Tania Mandiangu, a third-year student who is pursuing a Bachelor's in Health Science, Medical Laboratory Science. These two students have been selected as they demonstrate what it means to be leaders in their communities through their continuous dedication and drive toward creating a culture of support for our students on campus.
The OTSU sat down with the winners to ask them about their experience being a campus leader at Ontario Tech and in their community:

OTSU:
Congratulations on receiving this award! Your dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive campus community is an inspiration. Can you talk a little bit about your club involvement here at Ontario Tech?
Aliyat Olatinwo:
One of the campus involvements I'd like to highlight is the African Student Union (ASU), where I was an Events Executive. ASU is a community that celebrates and amplifies the diverse cultures and voices within the African community. Through a range of initiatives, including cultural events, educational programs, and community outreach efforts, ASU creates a sense of belonging and unity among African students and allies on campus. As a program planner, I've had the privilege of contributing to the planning and execution of impactful programs that promote cultural awareness, empower students, and strengthen ties within the African community and beyond.
Another noteworthy involvement is my role as the Founder and President of "The Stitching Nook". This club was established to create a welcoming and inclusive community for students passionate about crochet, knitting, and crafting. As the Founder and President, I’ve worked to provide a space where students can come together to explore their passions for crochet, knitting, and other crafts. Through workshops, collaborative projects, and social events, The Stitching Nook provides an avenue for students to share their love for these creative activities, develop new skills, form meaningful connections, and find support in a busy academic environment.
I love building inclusive communities and creating spaces where students can explore their passions, connect with like-minded peers, and find a sense of belonging. Through these clubs, I hope to leave a lasting legacy of creativity, friendship, and support on campus for current and future students alike.
OTSU:
Have there been some people along your journey who have inspired you to show up in the way you have?
Aliyat:
Throughout my journey at Ontario Tech University, the support and encouragement of my fellow executives, cherished friends, mentors, and loving family have been invaluable. Their unwavering belief in my abilities and their constant encouragement have inspired me to push myself further and make a lasting impact on campus.
