Ontario Tech University has another impressive international accolade to proclaim this winter, having made the Top 200 list of the world’s best young universities for the second consecutive year. The compilation for 2022, announced by influential international ranking organization Times Higher Education (THE) on February 15, places Ontario Tech No. 3 among Canada’s youngest universities.

The distinction comes only a month after Ontario Tech was again named one of Canada’s Research Universities of the Year for 2022 by Research Infosource (No. 2 among smaller universities, and No. 1 in Ontario).

THE ranks all international research institutions under 50 years old (founded in 1972 or later) using 13 performance criteria, including teaching, research, academic citations and international outlook. Ontario Tech, which is completing its 20th academic year and is one of the youngest universities in the survey, impressively advanced four places this past year (to No. 183),

A major component of Ontario Tech’s rapid upward trajectory is its record for new research grants and awards, and industry funding. In 2021-2022, Ontario Tech attracted more than $26 million in research grants and contracts, an increase of more than 20 per cent over 2020-2021. Ontario Tech has also generated significant research partnerships and relationships with other universities ranked by THE, including Australia’s University of Technology Sydney (No. 8).

THE’s academic citation database is the same one Research Infosource used for its ranking of Ontario Tech in the latest Research Universities of the Year compilation.

“Ontario Tech’s ranking as one of the world’s top young research universities is a significant achievement that reinforces our reputation as a rapidly growing hub of research excellence and top-notch academic expertise. It also signals the deepening impact of our research intensity and connections at the international level. While it is a proud moment for our university community, it is also an endorsement of the key economic development role we have established in the eastern Greater Toronto Area and beyond.”
