Ridgebacks tip off 2025 with win over Lakers

The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks used balanced scoring and a dominant rebounding effort to secure an 80-69 victory over the Nipissing Lakers Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks used balanced scoring and a dominant rebounding effort to secure an 80-69 victory over the Nipissing Lakers Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

Leading the way for the Ridgebacks was Keon Baker, who poured in 22 points, while Emmanuel Okonkwo delivered a near double-double with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Caleb Kassa controlled the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds and added 11 points. Raeshaun Ambris chipped in 12 points, playing efficiently on both ends.

The Ridgebacks set the tone early, finishing the first quarter up 18-15 thanks to strong defensive rebounding. They extended their lead in the second quarter, highlighted by Baker and Kassa's stand out performances.

Nipissing's Darnaz Mabanza fought to keep the Lakers in the game with 24 points, but their 27.6 per cent shooting from the field couldn't overcome Ontario Tech's efficiency.

The Ridgebacks will look to build on the win with a quick turn around tomorrow night when they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs at 8 p.m. at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
