Sold-out crowd backs Ridgebacks in semifinal finale
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech women's hockey team saw their historic post season run come to an end on Friday night, dropping a 2–0 decision to the Guelph Gryphons in Game 2 of the OUA semifinals in front of a sold-out Dog Pound.
A record crowd of 564 Ridgebacks fans packed the Campus Ice Centre, showing their support throughout the evening. Supporters gathered in the lobby before puck drop to make signs before taking their seats in the Dog Pound, where chants and cheers carried through the game.
After a scoreless opening period, Guelph broke through in the second when Kaitlyn McKenna found the back of the net shorthanded at 13:34, finishing a play set up by Teghan MacRae and Arielle MacDonald. The Gryphons added insurance early in the third period as Maddie Min scored at 3:42 off a feed from Jayden Calder to extend the lead to 2–0.
Ontario Tech continued to push throughout the final frame, generating several chances and finishing the night with 20 shots on goal, but Guelph goaltender Martina Fedel turned aside every attempt to record the shutout.
Zoe McGee made 19 saves in net for the Ridgebacks, keeping Ontario Tech within reach throughout the contest.
The loss closes the book on a record-setting campaign for the Ridgebacks, whose historic playoff run saw the program advance to the OUA semifinals for the first time.
