Ontario Tech University offers its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, students, and all who were touched by the life and teachings of Elder Shirley Williams (Migizi-ow-kwe).

The passing of an Elder reminds us that with each loss, a living library of knowledge, language and teachings is gone. This loss is deeply felt with the passing of Elder Shirley, whose wisdom and generosity enriched countless lives.

Elder Shirley was a kind, caring and generous teacher of Anishinaabemowin, who shared her knowledge with humility, patience and grace. She created learning spaces that were welcoming, supportive and inspiring, ensuring that every student felt included, encouraged and respected on their learning journey.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to Indigenous language revitalization, education and community leadership, Ontario Tech was privileged to confer upon Elder Shirley the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 2017.

She provided guidance on the university's Role in Reconciliation: Options and Opportunities in Indigenizing Curricula report, which evaluated curricular initiatives available to Ontario Tech in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action for education. She also shared her experiences of the impacts of residential schools and the path to community healing. In addition, she served as a valued member of Ontario Tech’s President’s Reconciliation Task Force, where her guidance, wisdom and steady presence helped lead the university forward on its ongoing journey of truth, learning and reconciliation.

Her teachings, spirit and commitment to language revitalization, reconciliation and healing will continue to live on through the many students, staff and faculty she guided, and the community she nurtured. We honour her legacy with gratitude and respect.
