Russell twins find community and recognition at Ontario Tech
OSHAWA, Ont. – Mi'kmaq sisters Samantha and Abbie Russell have found a home with the Ontario Tech women's soccer team, creating lasting memories and making significant contributions over the past two years.
Joining the Ridgebacks in 2023, Samantha and Abbie immediately made an impact. The duo started their first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) regular-season game together against RMC and have continued to shine ever since. Abbie has established herself as a key player in the Ridgebacks' defense, while Samantha scored the game-winning goal that secured the team's first victory of the 2024 season.
Their contributions haven't gone unnoticed. The Russell sisters achieved a rare sibling milestone in 2024, earning back-to-back Ontario Tech Athlete of the Week honors.
"It was a Russell takeover of Ontario Tech," Samantha joked, her laughter reflecting the bond they share.
Abbie's stellar performance this season also earned her a place as an OUA Second Team All-Star.
"This season had its ups and downs, but being named a second-team all-star is an incredible honor," she said.
For Samantha, the journey has been equally rewarding.
"I've really enjoyed my first two years at Ontario Tech," she said. "The close-knit community here, especially as a varsity athlete, has made my transition smoother. Having my sister alongside me has been a huge support."
Both sisters emphasized the significance of recognizing Indigenous cultures during their time at Ontario Tech. They commended the university for its initiatives, such as the Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre and Muk'wa's Den, as well as events like Red Dress Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
"To me, being Indigenous is about embracing your identity and sharing your culture," Abbie said.
Samantha echoed these sentiments. "I feel recognized and included here through the support and resources available for Indigenous students. It's been incredibly meaningful."
Their bond with teammates has also enriched their experience. Abbie noted the respect and trust she's built within the Ridgebacks community, highlighting her friendship with teammate Ella Pechkoff. Ella, often mistaken for Abbie's twin, has earned the affectionate title of "honorary Russell triplet."
"Everyone confuses Ella for Abbie's twin," Samantha said with a laugh, "which definitely gives me a sense of individuality at school."
For Samantha, the connections she's built on campus have been invaluable. "I've found my people here," she said. "My team and friends bring out the best in me, making school so much more enjoyable."
