Hoang and Nguyen capture gold in Waterloo
WATERLOO, Ont. – Joshua Nguyen (Markham, Ont.) and Chloe Hoang (Markham, Ont.) are bringing gold back to Oshawa from the individual event at the 2024 YONEX Canadian University and College Badminton Championship.
Nguyen battled his way to the men's singles semi-finals with wins over Brooks Liu, Darren Choi, and Kevin Wang. In the semi-finals, he defeated Timothy Lock 21-12,21-11, and he kicked off the final day of the championships by defeating Harold Tan 21-11,21-10, securing the first gold medal of the day for the Ridgebacks.
Hoang cruised through the quarter-finals with dominant showings against Da-Rose Adam-Pâquet, Natalie Yee, and Sherry Wu. In the semi-finals, she would take a tight 21-17, 19-21, 21-11 set against Sophia Nong, and in the finals, she took down Jackie Dent 21-19, 21-14 to bring home the second singles gold medal of the day.
Hoang and Nguyen also made it to the semi-finals of mixed doubles before falling 17-21, 21-15, 22-20 in a tight battle with Jackie and Thomas Dent, but would pick up the bronze medal in the event. Jailyn Joensen (Whitby, Ont.) and Hoang would also make it to the semi-finals of women's doubles and added another bronze medal to the total on the weekend.
