Full biography
Choose bravely, not wisely. Now is the time to be bold. These are the words of Sue Coffey, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, a passionate trailblazer in the nursing profession. Her belief in the transformative power of nursing as a highly impactful and meaningful profession in a rapidly evolving world led her to devote her career to researching innovative ways to educate nursing professionals who are authentic and highly committed to quality in their delivery. Nursing education has evolved considerably in recent years. As educational issues have emerged, she has developed innovative programs to meet those needs and respond to the educational issues in front of her. In particular, she developed a program funded by the Ministry of Citizenship for internationally educated nurses with no path for their profession – Ontario’s only program uniquely designed for internationally educated nurses. This became a turning point in understanding her career in accessible university education, and she has since focused her research on how to create smoother transitions and more beneficial learning experiences for all post-secondary students. Dr. Coffey holds some of her profession’s highest honours. Recently, her exemplary teaching in nursing earned her a national profile in the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing Quality Advancement in Nursing Education. In 2015, she received the Registered Nurses Association Award for Leadership in Nursing Research. She joined Ontario Tech University in 2009 as an associate professor in the Nursing Program and spent five years as the program’s director. Previously, she held numerous roles in York University’s School of Nursing including BScN co-ordinator of internationally educated nurses, associate professor, Undergraduate Program Director of the Post-RN Program, assistant professor, and faculty liaison in the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program. During her tenure at York, she obtained her Doctorate in Nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in 2004. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Master of Science in Nursing from D’Youville College, along with her Bachelor of Science in Neurosciences from the University of Toronto, and a Diploma in Nursing from George Brown College.
