Full biography
It takes a myriad of diverse healthcare specialists to maintain Canadians’ physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. An aging population puts tremendous strain on its stretched healthcare workforce. Brenda Gamble, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Accredited Health Programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences, takes a passionate, grassroots approach to establish unique partnerships that will best serve burgeoning community health and wellness needs. Her latest collaborative research strives to enhance the CPR response time in Durham Region using PulsePoint Respond, an advanced software app that can be downloaded to any mobile device and is connected to 911 services. It works by notifying users trained in CPR if someone nearby is having a cardiac emergency and can provide life-saving assistance, ahead of emergency responders. PulsePoint’s AED software allows users to report and update the locations of Automated External Defibrillators so emergency responders and trained citizens can access an AED quickly when a cardiac emergency occurs. The aim is to get help to the victim as rapidly as possible to increase their likelihood of survival. Dr. Gamble also works to improve the resources available to healthcare specialists including personal support workers (PSWs) by exploring their demographic profile and the challenges they face including unstandardized education and income disparity. The results of her data will guide proper resources to ensure PSWs can best support the continuum of care in Durham Region. Lauded for her expertise, Dr. Gamble is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Military, Veteran and Family Health, and she has contributed to the Canada Health Act. Being a positive role model for students, mentoring their development as good colleagues, caregivers and citizens brought Dr. Gamble to in 2008 as an Assistant Professor. In 2014, she was appointed Associate Professor, and Graduate Program Director in 2015. After graduating from the Medical Lab Technologist program at Fanshawe College in 1976, Dr. Gamble spent six years working in her field, before shifting her interests to study healthcare from social justice and policy perspective. In 1996, she earned her Bachelor of Arts with a Major in the Specialist Program Society Values and Medicine; her Master of Science in Medical Sciences in 2002, and her Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences in 2006, at the Institute of Medical Science in the Faculty of Medicine, all at the University of Toronto.
