Dr. Kamal Smimou likes nothing better than investing in his students because the payback is enormous. He came to Ontario Tech University in 2007 and was drawn to the emphasis on research and teaching—which, in his books, are the two halves of a solid education. In management, it is particularly important for students to understand the relevance and utility of both concepts and methodologies. Dr. Smimou's teaching objective is to help students see how they can apply particular knowledge, information and tools to practical situations (e.g. to offer and explain theories, approaches and techniques they can use to unravel business problems, obtain better predictions or explain real-world results). His view of learning is best defined by a mastery orientation, where a student is constantly working toward mastery of the course material, and is provided with opportunities to succeed.
