Ridgebacks duo honoured in OUA women’s soccer awards
OSHAWA, Ont. – The soccer season may be over, but the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks women's soccer team continues to shine, with Abbie Russell and Josee Jones earning recognition in the OUA's annual soccer awards.
Russell was named an OUA East Second-Team All-Star after another outstanding year anchoring the Ridgebacks' backline. She has continued to grow as a leader on and off the pitch, and earlier this season was named an Ontario Tech athlete of the week for her defensive presence against the Toronto Varsity Blues. This marks the second straight season the defender has received all-star honours.
Jones was named a Champion of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion by the OUA for her work helping to reshape the Ontario Tech BIPOC Athlete Association. The second-year midfielder was appointed president and recruited other student-athletes to form a new executive team. Within two months, Jones and her group revamped the association's vision and mission and became key contributors to the OUA Anti-Racism Awareness Week campaign, including organizing two on-campus OUA Anti-Racism Awareness games.
"Winning the Champion of EDI Award means more than recognition, it's a reminder that creating spaces where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered truly makes a difference. It's an honour to contribute to a more inclusive future in sport," said Jones.
