Ridgebacks and Lords set to host second annual Campus Clash
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks and Durham Lords are set to tip off the second annual Campus Clash on Thursday, March 21, at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
The day starts with a chance to win prizes with a student-skills competition and a three-point shoot-out from 3 p.m. until 4:45 p.m., followed by the Intramural All-Star Game hosted by Campus Recreation featuring the best intramural players from this year.
Throughout the day, there will be plenty of opportunities to show your school pride with face painting and free popcorn. Free t-shirts will be given out to the first to arrive, and an iPad giveaway will take place during the Heads or Tails event between the women's and men's games.
The women's match-up starts at 6:05 p.m. and features a matchup of exciting first-year talent. Emma Bergen has dominated for the Lords this year, scoring 19.6 points per game, including a 35 showing against the Centennial Colts. Bergen was named the OCAA Rookie of the Year and is flanked by veteran forward Emily Glendinning, who scored 11.8 points per game.
Conversely, the Ridgebacks are led by a trio of intriguing first-year talent. Felicity Villarin (Calgary, Alta.), Adra Barnet (Winnipeg, Man.), and Allie Dunnett (Sussex, N.B.) were all in the top ten in the country in terms of points for rookie performers. Villarin established herself as the Ridgebacks' new starting point guard, scoring 11 points per game. Dunnett brought a three-point threat to the lineup, scoring the most three-pointers of any rookie in the country, and Barnet finished with 8.7 points per game and four rebounds.
Lastly, this year's men's match-up is a clash of nationally ranked teams. The Ridgebacks had their best year yet as a program, with a 16-6 record in the regular season and finished no. 7 in the country in the season's final U SPORTS national rankings. They picked up their first playoff win in program history with an 89-78 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves before narrowly falling 59-54 in the OUA quarterfinals to the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Lords also had a spectacular season, finishing 17-1 in the conference, and were ranked no. 1 in the country in the CCAA national rankings. They were named OCAA East defensive team of the year and finished with a bronze medal at the OCAA Final Four with an 82-69 win over the St. Clair Saints.
