RECAP: Men's hockey season ends while men's basketball moves on
OSHAWA, Ont. – The Ontario Tech men's basketball and hockey teams both competed in the first week of the OUA playoffs this past weekend.
The men's hockey team saw their season come to a close in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Jeremy Michaud opened the scoring for the game just two minutes into the first period. After Ottawa's power-play goal, Justin Svenson put the Ridgebacks up by one to open the third period. Ottawa finished out the third with another power-play goal to force overtime. Just one minute into overtime, Tayem Gislason was brought down in front of the net, and the Gee-Gees were able to find the back of the net to secure the win.
The men's basketball team had a successful weekend, earning a spot in the OUA semifinals after taking down the no. 2 seed Lakehead Thunderwolves. The lead moved back and forth from the Ridgebacks to the Thunderwolves throughout the first half. Ayub Nurhussien and Zubair Seyed were able to capitalize on their shooting efficiency to close the gap, shooting a combined 50% from the three. The Ridgebacks had a big offensive push in the second half, with a 23-point third quarter, followed by a 26-point fourth.
The men's basketball team looks to carry their momentum to next Saturday when they will travel to Kingston to face the eighth ranked Queens Gaels.
