Ridgebacks punch ticket to semifinals with 2–1 win over Queen’s
KINGSTON, Ont. – The Ontario Tech women's hockey team's historic playoff run continues, as the Ridgebacks defeated the Queen's Gaels 2–1 on Sunday, March 1 to advance to the semifinals for the first time in program history.
After a scoreless opening period, Queen's struck first late in the second when Alex Recsky found the back of the net at 19:09 to give the Gaels a 1–0 lead.
Ontario Tech responded quickly to start the third. Just 25 seconds into the frame, Emily Harrison buried the equalizer, finishing a play set up by Julia Jackson and Harrie Jones to tie the game at 1–1.
The Ridgebacks kept pressing and were rewarded midway through the period. At 12:21, Elissa Burton scored her first OUA goal to give Ontario Tech its first lead of the night.
Zoe McGee was outstanding in goal, turning aside 33 of 34 shots to earn the win.
Ontario Tech will now face the Guelph Gryphons in the semifinals, with Game 1 set for Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Guelph, Ont. The series shifts to the Campus Ice Centre for Game 2 on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m., with a deciding Game 3 scheduled for Sunday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. in Guelph, Ont. if necessary.
