Joshua Nguyen earns OUA MVP honours at badminton championships
TORONTO, Ont. — The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks badminton team finished seventh at the 2026 OUA Badminton Championships, highlighted by a major individual honour for Joshua Nguyen.
Nguyen was named the OUA Male Most Valuable Player following a dominant performance throughout the championship, while both Nguyen and teammate Chloe Hoang were recognized as OUA All-Stars.
Ontario Tech opened the tournament with a tightly contested 6–4 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Ridgebacks picked up victories in men's singles, women's singles, men's singles two and women's doubles two, with Nguyen earning a decisive 21–5, 21–5 win in the opening singles match while Chloe Hoang added a straight-sets victory in women's singles.
The Ridgebacks rebounded later that day with a strong 7–3 win over the Guelph Gryphons. Ontario Tech collected wins in men's doubles, men's singles, mixed doubles, women's singles, women's singles two and mixed doubles two to secure the victory. Nguyen again led the charge with a commanding straight-set win in singles before teaming with Venuga Kariharan for a comeback victory in mixed doubles.
Ontario Tech then faced two of the tournament's top programs, dropping matches to the Waterloo Warriors and York Lions, who would go on to finish second and fourth respectively in the final standings.
In the consolation round, the Ridgebacks battled the TMU Bold to a 5–5 draw. Nguyen capped off his standout weekend with a three-set mixed doubles victory alongside Venuga Kariharan, while Hoang added a straight-sets win in women's singles and also contributed to a mixed doubles victory with Ahan Patel.
