Hoang to represent Canada at 2025 FISU Summer World University Games
OSHAWA, Ont. – Ontario Tech badminton standout Chloe Hoang is headed to Germany as a member of Team Canada in the upcoming FISU Summer World University Games.
"I'm honoured to be selected for the FISU World University Games for badminton and to represent Team Canada," said Hoang. "I'm excited to have the opportunity to compete against some of the best student-athletes around the world."
Hoang joined the Ridgebacks in 2023-24 and became a key component of the Ridgebacks' badminton team by leading with hard work and discipline. She started strong, picking up a first-place finish with Jailyn Joensen at the Laurier Invitational and was named Ontario Tech athlete of the week. She finished the year by winning a gold medal in women's singles at the YONEX Canadian University championship, becoming the first Ridgeback athlete to win a gold medal at a national event. She also picked up a bronze medal with Joensen in women's doubles.
She followed up that year with an incredible showing at the OUA Badminton Championship held at York University. Both Chloe Hoang and Joshua Nguyen were named OUA All-Stars for their efforts.
The FISU World University Games are hosted bi-annually, alternating between winter and summer sports in different cities, and showcases more than 9,500 of the world's top university athletes. The World University Games date back to 1923 and were founded by university sports leader, Jean Petitjean. This year's games will be held in Rhine–Ruhr, Germany from July 16 to July 27.
Hoang becomes the latest Ridgeback to join an esteemed list of Ontario Tech representatives who have worn the maple leaf at the FISU World University Games. Earlier this year, Athletic Director Scott Barker served on Team Canada's mission staff. In 2021, women's hockey player Natalie Wozney was named to the national roster before the event was cancelled. Back in 2019, Kassidy Nauboris (women's hockey), along with Jack Patterson and Alex Yuill (men's hockey), suited up for Canada. In 2017, Chris Cameron contributed as a Communications Officer, while both Kylie Bordeleau and Katherine Koehler-Grassau were selected to Canada's women's soccer team in 2015 and again in 2017.
